In January 2026, the FDA approved Yuvezzi, the first and only dual-agent eye drop specifically approved to treat presbyopia in adults. It's expected to be widely available in U.S. pharmacies by mid-2026.
What Is Presbyopia?
Presbyopia is the natural, age-related loss of near vision that affects nearly everyone starting in their 40s. As the lens of the eye stiffens over time, it becomes harder to focus on close-up objects — reading, texting, threading a needle. Unlike other refractive errors, presbyopia isn't something you can prevent; it's a normal part of aging that eventually affects almost every adult.
How Yuvezzi Works
Yuvezzi combines two active ingredients — carbachol and brimonidine — in a single daily eye drop. Together they gently constrict the pupil, creating what's called a "pinhole effect." Just like squinting sharpens a blurry view, this small pupil constriction extends your depth of focus, making close-up text and objects clearer without reading glasses.
What the Clinical Trials Showed
The FDA's approval was backed by two Phase 3 trials involving more than 800 patients:
In the BRIO-I study, the combination drop outperformed each individual ingredient alone — a requirement for FDA approval of any combination therapy. In BRIO-II, patients using Yuvezzi gained three lines or more of near-vision improvement lasting up to eight hours, without sacrificing distance vision. A 12-month safety study found no serious treatment-related side effects, suggesting it's well tolerated for regular, ongoing use.
Who Might Benefit
Yuvezzi is designed for adults with presbyopia who want an alternative — or a supplement — to reading glasses. It won't replace glasses for everyone, and it isn't a fix for other vision problems like nearsightedness or astigmatism. But for people who find reading glasses inconvenient, unflattering, or easy to lose, a once-daily drop that sharpens near vision for hours at a time is a genuinely new option.
