EYE CARE STORIES
Your eyes reveal more than vision.
A routine eye exam can be an important window into your overall health.

More than a glasses prescription
A routine eye exam does more than update your glasses prescription. It gives your optometrist a direct, non-invasive look at blood vessels and nerves that can reveal early warning signs of systemic and chronic conditions—sometimes before symptoms appear elsewhere in the body.
Why the eyes reveal so much
The eyes are the only place in the body where a doctor can directly observe blood vessels and nerve tissue without surgery or invasive testing. The retina’s vessels can reflect changes occurring elsewhere, including bleeding, swelling, narrowing, or abnormal growth.
What a comprehensive exam can help detect
Diabetes: High blood sugar can damage small retinal blood vessels, causing diabetic retinopathy. Eye changes may appear before a person knows they have diabetes.
High blood pressure: Hypertension can cause retinal vessels to narrow, bleed, or swell. These changes may be visible before a person notices symptoms.
Eye and neurological conditions: A comprehensive exam also helps identify changes related to glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and other conditions that can threaten vision without early warning signs.
Why prevention matters
Finding a change early gives you and your healthcare team time to confirm the cause, manage risk factors, and protect vision. When an exam turns up something concerning, we can recommend appropriate follow-up with your primary-care or specialty provider.
The bottom line
A comprehensive eye exam is not just about how well you see—it is a valuable check on the health behind your vision. If you have not had an exam this year, schedule one with Dr. Anklin.
